Militar de carrera en la junta del NPRC, encabezó en 1996 un golpe que derrocó a Valentine Strasser, organizó después elecciones y transfirió el poder al civil electo Ahmad Tejan Kabbah en cuestión de meses. Tras años en el extranjero y de estudios, ganó la presidencia por el SLPP en 2018.
