Nacida Mokgadi Caster Semenya en una aldea cerca de Polokwane, en Limpopo, irrumpió al ganar el título mundial de 800 m en Berlín en 2009, siendo una adolescente desconocida, y desató de inmediato una tormenta mundial en torno a su sexo.

She won Olympic 800m gold in 2012 and 2016 and multiple world titles, dominating her event for nearly a decade, and became the central figure in a landmark legal fight against World Athletics' testosterone rules, winning a discrimination ruling at the European Court of Human Rights in 2023.

Her case is genuinely difficult: born with differences of sex development and naturally high testosterone, she was subjected to invasive scrutiny no athlete should endure, yet the rules she fought were framed by some as protecting fair competition, leaving sport with no consensus and her career effectively ended by regulations she still contests.
