Obafemi Awolowo
The visionary planner who gave a Nigerian region free education for all, and later defended a wartime policy that still divides the nation.

The rise
Born in Ikenne and trained in law in Britain, he organised Yoruba political and cultural life, founded the Action Group party, and won power as Premier of the Western Region.
What they did
In 1955 he launched free, compulsory primary education across Western Nigeria, the first scheme of its scale in Africa, doubling school enrolment within years and making the region the country's intellectual powerhouse; he also pioneered free healthcare and bold regional development planning.
The full picture
As federal finance commissioner during the 1967–1970 civil war he backed the blockade of Biafra and defended starvation as a legitimate instrument of war, a stance linked to mass civilian famine that remains deeply contested. He never won the national presidency he sought, and his record blends extraordinary developmental vision with a hardness in wartime that critics have never forgiven.
Why it matters
He is the archetype of the developmental African leader, showing how planning and free education can transform a society, while his civil-war role forces an honest reckoning with how even great builders can make ruthless choices.
“Nigeria is not a nation. It is a mere geographical expression.”
