The rise
Born in Zungeru to Igbo parents and fluent in Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba, he studied in the United States, then built mass nationalist sentiment through a chain of newspapers in the Gold Coast and Nigeria before co-founding the NCNC in 1944.
What they did
He became the leading voice of Nigerian nationalism, mentored figures like Kwame Nkrumah, helped steer Nigeria to independence in 1960, founded the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and served as the new nation's first president.
The full picture
Critics charged him with using his newspapers to silence rivals and accused him of drifting toward ethnic and regional politics as national unity frayed. His presidency was largely ceremonial and ended when the 1966 coup swept away the First Republic he had helped build.
Why it matters
He is often called the father of Nigerian nationalism and a Pan-African pioneer, a reminder that ideas, media and education can be as decisive as armies in liberating a continent.
