Béhanzin
The 'King Shark' who went to war with a European empire to keep his kingdom free.
The rise
The eleventh king of Dahomey, Béhanzin took the throne in 1890 as France moved to seize the kingdom's coast and lucrative trade.
What they did
He led fierce resistance in the Franco-Dahomean Wars, fielding a disciplined army — including the famed women warriors known as the Dahomey Amazons (Agojie) — and held the French at bay across two hard-fought campaigns.
The full picture
Outmatched by modern artillery, his capital Abomey fell in 1894. He surrendered to spare his people and was exiled to Martinique and then Algeria, where he died in 1906; his remains were later honoured in Benin.
Why it matters
Béhanzin endures as a symbol of uncompromising African resistance to colonial conquest — and his Agojie warriors have become an icon of the continent's martial history.
“If you want war, I am ready. I will not end it, though it lasted a hundred years and killed twenty thousand of my men.”
