Mary McLeod Bethune
The daughter of formerly enslaved parents who built a college and advised presidents.
The rise
The fifteenth of seventeen children born to formerly enslaved parents in South Carolina, Bethune turned a tiny Florida school she founded in 1904 into what became Bethune-Cookman University.
What they did
She led the National Association of Colored Women and founded the National Council of Negro Women, advised President Franklin Roosevelt as part of his 'Black Cabinet', and championed Black education and voting.
The full picture
She worked within a segregated system that limited how far Black institutions and women could go, choosing steady institution-building over confrontation.
Why it matters
Bethune built lasting institutions and opened the doors of federal power to Black women a generation before the civil-rights era.
“I leave you love. Love builds. It is positive and helpful.”
