Aliko Dangote
The builder proving Africa can manufacture, not just import.
The rise
Starting as a trader, Dangote built a pan-African industrial empire in cement, sugar, salt, and flour — the Dangote Group — becoming the continent's wealthiest entrepreneur.
What they did
He bet on local production over imports, culminating in one of the world's largest oil refineries near Lagos — a multibillion-dollar gamble to end Nigeria's dependence on imported fuel.
The full picture
His dominance raises questions about market concentration and the cozy ties between big capital and the state, and mega-projects have faced costly delays.
Why it matters
Dangote reframes the African story from extraction to industrialization — showing homegrown capital can build at continental scale.
“To build a successful business, you must start small and dream big.”
