Baker spent decades organizing for the NAACP and helped run Martin Luther King Jr.'s Southern Christian Leadership Conference, all while insisting on bottom-up, participatory leadership.

In 1960 she guided student sit-in activists to form the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), mentoring young leaders like John Lewis and shaping the grassroots heart of the movement.
