Tony Elumelu

The rise

Elumelu turned a small, troubled bank into a pan-African financial powerhouse, then built a sprawling investment group across power, finance and resources.

What they did

Through his foundation he pledged to seed and mentor thousands of African entrepreneurs, advancing his philosophy of 'Africapitalism' — private capital driving public good.

The full picture

Critics ask whether philanthropy at scale can substitute for structural reform, but few have backed homegrown founders so directly.

Why it matters

Elumelu reframes Africa's future around its entrepreneurs rather than aid or extraction.
