Fela Kuti
The musician who turned the dancefloor into a platform of resistance.
The rise
Trained in London, Fela returned to Nigeria and forged Afrobeat — a fusion of jazz, funk, and West African rhythm — building it into a global sound and a movement.
What they did
Through epic, defiant songs he attacked military dictatorship, corruption, and neocolonialism, naming his commune the 'Kalakuta Republic' and running for president.
The full picture
He paid dearly: his compound was raided and burned, he was beaten and jailed repeatedly. His personal life and views drew controversy, but his courage was never in doubt.
Why it matters
Fela proved culture is power. Afrobeat's global descendants and Africa's protest music still carry his fearless voice.
“With my music I create a change. I see it. So really I am using my music as a weapon.”
