The rise
A young army officer, Gaddafi seized power in a 1969 coup, toppling the monarchy and styling himself the guide of a stateless 'people's republic'.
What they did
He used Libya's oil wealth to fund generous social programs at home and sweeping pan-African ambitions abroad, bankrolling the African Union and championing a 'United States of Africa'.
The full picture
His rule was deeply authoritarian — crushing dissent, sponsoring militant groups and attacks abroad, and isolating Libya for decades. He was captured and killed in the 2011 NATO-backed uprising, after which Libya fell into lasting chaos.
Why it matters
Gaddafi embodies the paradox of the strongman — pan-African benefactor and brutal autocrat at once — and his fall warns that toppling a tyrant without a plan can be its own catastrophe.
