Hannibal Barca
The North African general who marched elephants over the Alps to shake Rome.
The rise
Born in Carthage (modern Tunisia), Hannibal took command of its armies and carried the war to Rome itself.
What they did
In an audacious campaign he crossed the Alps with war elephants and shattered Roman armies — above all at Cannae — in one of history's greatest feats of generalship.
The full picture
Rome ultimately prevailed, Carthage fell, and Hannibal took his own life in exile to avoid capture — yet his tactics are still studied in war colleges today.
Why it matters
Hannibal ranks among antiquity's greatest commanders and a reminder of North Africa's power on the ancient Mediterranean stage.
“No keener weapon has been put into men's hands by the immortal gods than a contempt for death.”
