Mansa Musa
The emperor whose pilgrimage of gold dazzled the medieval world.
The rise
Mansa Musa inherited and expanded the vast Mali Empire, commanding the trans-Saharan trade in gold and salt at its height.
What they did
His legendary 1324 pilgrimage to Mecca — distributing so much gold it disrupted economies along the route — put Mali on world maps, and he made Timbuktu a renowned centre of learning and architecture.
The full picture
Much of his story survives only through foreign chroniclers, and the empire he led would fragment within a few generations of his death.
Why it matters
Mansa Musa endures as proof of Africa's medieval wealth, scholarship and global reach — a rebuttal to colonial myths of a continent without history.
“The king who was my predecessor did not believe that it was impossible to discover the furthest limit of the Atlantic Ocean and wished vehemently to do so.”
