What they did
In 1896 he crushed an invading Italian army at the Battle of Adwa — the most decisive victory of an African power over a European colonizer — securing Ethiopia's independence. He founded Addis Ababa and introduced railways, schools, and electricity.
The full picture
His imperial expansion was itself a conquest of southern peoples, leaving grievances that echo today, and his modernization was uneven.
