The rise
A regional king who rose to the imperial throne, Menelik unified Ethiopia's provinces and modernized its army with imported firearms.
What they did
In 1896 he crushed an invading Italian army at the Battle of Adwa — the most decisive victory of an African power over a European colonizer — securing Ethiopia's independence. He founded Addis Ababa and introduced railways, schools, and electricity.
The full picture
His imperial expansion was itself a conquest of southern peoples, leaving grievances that echo today, and his modernization was uneven.
Why it matters
Adwa made Ethiopia a beacon of African independence and a symbol of resistance worldwide — proof that colonization was not destiny.
