Mo Ibrahim
The billionaire who put a price on good leadership.
The rise
A Sudanese-British engineer, Ibrahim founded Celtel, building mobile networks across Africa when others saw only risk, and later sold it for billions.
What they did
He created the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, the Ibrahim Index of African Governance, and the Ibrahim Prize — the world's largest, awarded only to democratically elected African leaders who serve well and leave office.
The full picture
Tellingly, in several years the prize committee has found no worthy recipient — a pointed verdict on the state of African leadership.
Why it matters
Ibrahim reframed the continent's central challenge as governance, and built the tools to measure and reward it.
“Leadership is not about power; it is about responsibility.”
