The rise

Trained as a doctor in Portugal, where his poetry and anti-colonial activism led to repeated arrests, Neto returned home and was elected president of the MPLA in 1962, leading its armed struggle against Portuguese colonial rule for over a decade.

What they did

He proclaimed Angola's independence in 1975 and, with decisive Cuban and Soviet support, secured the MPLA's hold on Luanda; he is also celebrated as one of Africa's foremost modern poets, a literary voice of the liberation generation.
