The rise
A community organizer, law professor and senator, Obama vaulted to national fame with a 2004 convention speech and won the presidency in 2008 on a message of hope and change.
What they did
He passed the Affordable Care Act extending health coverage to millions, steered the country out of the 2008 financial crisis, restored diplomatic ties with Cuba, and struck the Paris climate accord and Iran nuclear deal. He won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.
The full picture
Critics on the left faulted continued drone warfare and deportations, while fierce partisan opposition blocked much of his agenda and fueled a backlash that shaped the politics that followed.
Why it matters
Obama's election reset the horizon of possibility for Black Americans and, with Kenyan roots, made him a figure of pride across Africa and its diaspora.
