The rise
A Western-educated businessman who had run the United Africa Company's Togo operations, Olympio became the leading voice of the nationalist Comité de l'Unité Togolaise and rode his party to victory in the UN-supervised 1958 elections, leading Togo to full independence in 1960.
What they did
He brought Togo to independence in 1960, pursued an austere economic nationalism aimed at financial self-reliance, and pushed for monetary independence from France, including plans for a Togolese currency outside the CFA franc zone.
The full picture
His rule grew increasingly authoritarian and personalist: he narrowed political space, jailed or exiled rivals, and refused to absorb demobilised soldiers returning from the French army, a decision that helped trigger the 1963 coup in which he was shot dead outside the US embassy in Lomé, becoming independent Africa's first assassinated head of state.
Why it matters
Olympio embodies both the promise of pan-African economic sovereignty and the fragility of post-colonial states; his murder by ex-soldiers, among them future strongman Gnassingbé Eyadéma, set a template for decades of military intervention in African politics.
