Osei Tutu I

The rise

Born around 1660 near Kokofu, Osei Tutu was held hostage as a young man by the rival Denkyira state, then escaped to the powerful Akwamu kingdom, where he studied statecraft and warfare before returning to lead the small state of Kumasi.

What they did

With his priest and advisor Okomfo Anokye, he united the fractious Akan states into the Asante Confederacy around a sacred Golden Stool, then crushed the dominant Denkyira kingdom at the Battle of Feyiase in 1701 to found the Asante Empire.

The full picture

The empire he built grew wealthy on the gold and firearms trade with European traders on the coast, and the centralized institutions he created endured for two centuries, but that same trade network entrenched Asante as a major supplier in the transatlantic slave trade.

Why it matters

Osei Tutu's fusion of spiritual symbolism and political-military organization created one of precolonial Africa's most durable states, and the Golden Stool he established remains the living symbol of Asante identity today.
