Ousmane Sembène
The self-taught docker who built African cinema from nothing and called it the people's night school.
The rise
Born in 1923 in Ziguinchor, Sembène worked as a fisherman, bricklayer and dockworker, was drafted into French colonial forces during World War II, and taught himself to read and write before publishing his first novel, "Le Docker noir," in 1956.
What they did
Turning to film in his late thirties because most of his audience could not read, he directed "La Noire de..." in 1966, widely regarded as the first major feature by a sub-Saharan African filmmaker, and "Mandabi" in 1968, the first African film shot in an African language, Wolof.
The full picture
His unsparing critiques of colonialism, corrupt African elites and Islamic orthodoxy in films like "Xala" and "Ceddo" drew censorship battles with both French and Senegalese authorities, and he struggled for decades to secure funding and distribution outside Europe.
Why it matters
Sembène insisted African stories be told by Africans in African languages, and his body of work remains the founding reference point for every filmmaker on the continent who came after him.
“Cinema is a permanent night school.”
