Caster Semenya
The unbeatable 800m champion whose body became the battleground for one of sport's hardest questions about sex, fairness and human rights.
The rise
Born Mokgadi Caster Semenya in a village near Polokwane in Limpopo, she burst onto the scene by winning the 800m world title in Berlin in 2009 as an unknown teenager, immediately igniting a global storm over her sex.
What they did
She won Olympic 800m gold in 2012 and 2016 and multiple world titles, dominating her event for nearly a decade, and became the central figure in a landmark legal fight against World Athletics' testosterone rules, winning a discrimination ruling at the European Court of Human Rights in 2023.
The full picture
Her case is genuinely difficult: born with differences of sex development and naturally high testosterone, she was subjected to invasive scrutiny no athlete should endure, yet the rules she fought were framed by some as protecting fair competition, leaving sport with no consensus and her career effectively ended by regulations she still contests.
Why it matters
Semenya forced the world to confront how it polices the female body in sport, becoming a symbol of dignity for intersex and gender-diverse people while exposing how science, fairness and human rights can collide without easy answers.
“"I am Mokgadi Caster Semenya. I am a woman and I am fast."”
