Wole Soyinka
Playwright and poet; first African Nobel laureate in Literature
The playwright who made conscience a weapon against tyranny.
The rise
A dramatist, poet, and essayist, Soyinka became in 1986 the first African to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.
What they did
Across plays, memoirs, and essays — and at real personal risk — he has confronted dictatorship and corruption in Nigeria and beyond, even enduring imprisonment for his activism.
The full picture
Uncompromising and combative, he has feuded with governments and peers alike, never trading his independence for comfort.
Why it matters
Soyinka proves that the writer's voice, fearlessly used, is itself a form of political leadership.
“The man dies in all who keep silent in the face of tyranny.”
