Sundiata Keïta

The rise

Born to the Keita royal line of the Malinke and, by tradition, a sickly child who could not walk in his youth, he was driven into exile but returned to lead a coalition of Mandinka chiefdoms against the Sosso king Sumanguru Kanté.

What they did

He crushed Sumanguru at the Battle of Kirina around 1235, founded the Mali Empire with its capital at Niani, and is credited with the Kurukan Fuga—an oral charter setting out the empire's social order, clan relations and early principles of governance.

The full picture

Almost everything we know comes from the Epic of Sundiata, an oral tradition transmitted by griots and only later written down, so the line between the historical king and the mythic hero is genuinely blurred, and the celebrated Kurukan Fuga as a fixed "charter" is partly a modern reconstruction.

Why it matters

Sundiata is the founding figure of one of Africa's great civilisations and a touchstone for African ideas of legitimate, consultative rule transmitted through living oral memory rather than written law.
