The rise
A teacher and lawyer — Mandela's law partner — Tambo was sent abroad as the regime banned the ANC, and built its international campaign.
What they did
For three decades he held the movement together from exile, mobilizing the global sanctions and solidarity that helped bring apartheid down.
The full picture
He spent most of his life away from home and suffered a stroke before democracy arrived, dying in 1993 just as freedom dawned.
Why it matters
Without Tambo's patient, selfless stewardship, the celebrated 1994 victory might never have come.
“We seek to create a united Democratic and non-racial society.”
