Ruben Um Nyobè
The nationalist who took Cameroon's case to the UN three times, and was hunted down in the forest for it.

The rise
Born in 1913 near Boumnyebel in Bassa country, Um Nyobè was a Presbyterian-schooled clerk and trade unionist who became secretary-general of the Union des populations du Cameroun months after its founding in April 1948. His platform was simple and, to Paris, intolerable: immediate independence and reunification of French and British Cameroon.
What they did
He argued that case before the UN Trusteeship Council and General Assembly in 1952, 1953 and 1954, the first African nationalist to plead directly in New York. When France banned the UPC in June 1955 after deadly riots, he went underground in the Sanaga-Maritime forests and led a maquis while continuing to write for a negotiated, peaceful path.
The full picture
On 13 September 1958 French troops shot him near Boumnyebel, dragged his body through the mud and buried it in concrete without ceremony. The war his death did not end killed tens of thousands; independent Cameroon under Ahidjo banned even his name until 1991, and the UPC he built splintered into rival factions.
Why it matters
Um Nyobè embodies the decolonisation France would rather forget: legal, articulate and internationalist, answered with a bullet, and a reminder that formal independence and liberation were not the same thing.
“The Union of the Peoples of Cameroon says out loud what the majority, the vast majority of Cameroonians say under their breath.”
