The 'Mother of the Nation' who kept the struggle alive for 27 years, and paid for it in ways that still divide South Africa.

The rise
Born in Bizana in the Transkei in 1936, she became Johannesburg's first Black medical social worker and married Nelson Mandela in 1958. After his 1964 life sentence she was banned, jailed for 491 days in 1969–70, much of it in solitary, and banished to the remote town of Brandfort from 1977 to 1985.
What they did
For nearly three decades she was the movement's most visible face inside the country, defying bans, rallying township youth and keeping Mandela's name alive when the state wanted it forgotten. Freed from banishment, she led the ANC Women's League, sat in parliament for most of the democratic era and remained a hero to the poor until her death in 2018.
The full picture
In April 1986 she endorsed 'necklacing' with 'our boxes of matches and our necklaces'; her Mandela United Football Club terrorised Soweto, and she was convicted in 1991 of kidnapping 14-year-old Stompie Seipei, later murdered. The TRC found her 'politically and morally accountable' for gross violations, she divorced Mandela in 1996 and was convicted of fraud in 2003.
Why it matters
Madikizela-Mandela forces an honest reckoning with liberation itself: the state's cruelty made her, and the violence she then wielded cannot be separated from the courage that sustained a nation.
“I am the product of the masses of my country and the product of my enemy.”
