The rise
As queen mother of Ejisu in the Asante kingdom, Yaa Asantewaa held both spiritual and political authority.
What they did
When British colonizers demanded the sacred Golden Stool and exiled the Asante king, she rallied the kingdom and led the 1900 uprising known as the War of the Golden Stool.
The full picture
The revolt was eventually crushed and she was exiled to the Seychelles, where she died — but the Golden Stool itself was never surrendered.
Why it matters
She endures as one of Africa's earliest and fiercest symbols of women's leadership and anti-colonial resistance.
